Closer, the plot
alice ayers (Natalie Portman) is an American woman who is traveling in London where, shortly after her arrival, she is involved in a car accident when she is hit by a taxi. Alice is immediately helped by Dan Woolf (Jude Law), a hardened playboy with artistic bent. A year after the meeting, Dan has written a book about Alice and during the presentation of the novel he meets the photographer Anna (Julia Roberts) with whom he starts flirting quite blatantly. Meanwhile Alice becomes the subject of some shots of Anna and the intimacy of shooting gives the girl the opportunity to ask the photographer not to spoil her romance.
Meanwhile Dan meets the dermatologist Larry (Clive Owen), against whom he builds a trap to make him meet Anna without his knowledge. Dan’s plan doesn’t go as planned and the two end up falling in love, planting the seeds of a very serious relationship. But behind the scenes the situation is much more complicated: not only Anna and Dan continue to have a relationship in secret, but Larry discovers that he has a strong attraction for Alice, who may no longer be the same woman who arrived in London.
Natalie Portman’s strange gift to Julia Roberts
Before being a Hollywood film, Closer it was a play that was quite successful. As reported by IMDB extensionthe first of Closer premiered at the Music Box Theater in New York City on March 15, 1999. The main cast starred Rupert Graves as Dan, a role that later went to Clive Owen, who plays dermatologist Larry in Mike Nichols’ film. The play had 172 performances and its success was such that many sentences spoken within the work were material for song lyrics or titles. For example i fall out Boy they wrote a song called Thanks fr th Mmrsin which they sing: “He tastes like you, but sweeter”which is what Anna says to Larry about Daniel when they’re in the middle of an argument in their apartment.
Closer it was also a very important film for the protagonist Natalie Portmanbecause it was the film that allowed her to free herself from the universe and the fandom from Star Wars. Specifically, the actress wanted her name not to be linked only to a great sci-fi epic that, however famous, could in some way limit her possibilities as an actress. And certainly she is the interpreter of The black Swan he was also delighted to be able to work with Julia Roberts, even though the first gift he gave her seemed to suggest otherwise. According to the website of theInternet Movie Database, in fact, shortly before starting filming Natalie Portman would have given Julia Roberts a necklace bearing the inscription “whore*a”. It was neither an insult nor a provocation, but an “amusing” gift that was linked to the fact that both Alice and Anna are described, in the film, as two women who do not give up their vulgarity. Julia Roberts did not take it at all for the goliardic gift of her colleague so much so that, again according to the site IMDB extensionat the end of filming he would have given Natalie Portman a similar necklace, which however had the writing “Bitch*ss”.
